Job Description:

GENERAL PURPOSE

Incumbents are responsible for performing a wide variety of construction activities requiring little or no experience or independent judgment. The Laborer is the first level of a eight-level construction series.  The Laborer is an entry level position which performs routine labor and maintenance duties and requires no specific craft skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent/Foreman or Skilled Construction Worker.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Basic entry level jobs requiring very little skill.

Follows company policies and processes regarding PPE.

Digs, spreads, and levels dirt and gravel, using pick and shovel; mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, gravel and other materials using hand tools; lifts, carries, and holds building materials, tools, and supplies; and, cleans tools, equipment, materials, and work areas.

Performs routine tasks such as setting and removing forms from concrete, filling joints, painting, grouting, installing steel siding, and, joining, wrapping, and sealing sections of pipe.

Assists Construction Workers and Skilled Construction Workers with a variety of construction activities in the areas of layout, carpentry, painting, waterproofing, concrete work, masonry, structural steel work, and demolition. General

Operates light equipment such as air-hammer, concrete saws, concrete vibrator, concrete pump, etc.

Ensure that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed, bring problems to the attention of the Superintendent, Field Safety Coordinator or HR Manager.

Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

KNOWLEDGE OF (POSITION REQUIREMENTS AT ENTRY)

General labor and maintenance tasks;

Hand tool operation.

Equipment uses and practices.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties such as those listed above. 

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Operating light maintenance equipment;

Cleaning tools and equipment;

Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS

Valid Iowa Driver’s License preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Positions in this class typically require:   climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises.

Heavy Work:  Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Travel will be required. We have different levels/lengths of travel that all depends on the project(s).
