Job Description:

SAFETY SPECIALIST

Department:                 Safety

FLSA Designation:       Non-Exempt

PURPOSE

The Safety Specialist oversees and coordinates jobsite safety activities and programs to ensure a safe, healthy and accident-free work environment for jobsite team members.  This position is responsible for developing and implementing accident prevention programs and upholding safety accountability for job site team members.

Maintain and grow the “Client for Life” concept for existing and new customers.   Performs related work as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are typical for this job. These are not to be constructed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

      • Perform employment and safety orientations
      • Provide oversight to all subcontractors hired by the Company
      • Audit jobsites for health and safety hazards and provide corrective and preventative measures
      • Conduct onsite safety training
      • Understand how to use and maintain safety equipment including, but not limited to air monitors, fall protection, and confined space equipment
      • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and specific site requirements
      • Input and retrieve training in Training Vault
      • Create and maintain standard operating safety procedures and policies
      • Case management for Workers Compensation injuries:
        1. Accompany injured team members to the healthcare facility
        2. Complete any necessary paperwork pertaining to case
        3. Complete root cause analysis
      • Investigate incidents:
        1. Complete root cause analysis
        2. Complete required paperwork
      • Communicate information concerning any current or potential safety or health hazard to the onsite team
      • Perform Toolbox Talks and Safety Stand downs on jobsites
      • Inspect and document safety equipment
      • Assist in pre-planning of high-risk work including, but not limited to crane pick plans
      • Perform onsite drug and alcohol testing if needed for pre-employment and post-accident 

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

      • Associate or bachelor’s degree in safety, or related field OR equivalent experience
      • Three (3) years’ experience in construction safety and/or OSHA training
      • GSP, CSP, CHST, a plus

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

      • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
      • OSHA 30 Certified, a plus 
      • First Aid/CPR Certified, a plus

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

      • Exceptional customer service skills
      • Strong organization, prioritization and attention to detail 
      • Must have proficient Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel skills
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Demonstrated ability to partner with employees at all levels of the organization
      • Demonstrated competence in reacting to and handling emergency situations
      • Ability to adapt to a quickly changing workplace

ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY

At any given time, may be exposed to:

      • Changing conditions on a construction site and/or industrial site risks and environment
      • Variety of temperature and weather conditions 

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS

      • Laptop PC
      • PPE (hard toe boots, hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hi-vis vest, harness)
      • Weather appropriate clothing
      • Basic knowledge of tools

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

    • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching
    • Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds and more occasionally
    • Warehouse:  Ability to operate a forklift vehicle
    • Must be able to bend, stretch, kneel and crouch
    • Ability to work in a variety of temperature and weather conditions
